• When/Where/How do I submit my magnet school application?

    Magnet school applications will be accepted from February 5, 2018 through March 12, 2018. You may mail or drop off your completed application and supporting documents in person at: Asheville City Schools, Magnet School Office, 85 Mountain Street, Asheville, NC 28801.  Please submit applications based on the following schedule:

    In District 

    • February 4, 2019 - March 12, 2019


    • February 4, 2019 - March 12, 2019

    Out of District

    • February 4, 2019 - March 12, 2019


    When will I receive my child's school assignment?

    • In-District parents will be notified on or before May 3, 2019
    • Out of District parents will be notified on or before May 31, 2019


    Is the application process “first come, first served”?

    The magnet school application process is not first come, first served.  According to Asheville City Schools Administrative Procedure 4150-P, after applying student assignment criteria, if there is insufficient space to assign all first priority choices at a particular school, a lottery will be used.


    What documents should I include with my application?

    Parents/guardians will need to provide the following documents with their application: the child’s birth certificate, parent/guardian photo ID, and two proofs of residence (one mortgage statement/lease agreement and a utility bill or tax bill).


    Will my child be assigned to my first priority choice school?

    Initial school assignments for the 2019-2020 will be made based on the pool of applications accepted during our open enrollment window from February 4, 2019 - March 12, 2019.  After applying school assignment criteria per Asheville City Schools Board Policy, if there is insufficient space to assign all first priority choices at a particular school, a lottery will be used.  Applications accepted after the open enrollment window will be assigned as received.


    How do I enroll my child in a Preschool classroom located at one of the elementary magnet schools?

    To be age eligible for district Preschool classrooms, children must be 3 or 4 as of August 31, and these ages are blended together in classrooms of up to 18 children.  Elementary classrooms are designed to be about half private-paying tuition and half publicly-funded NC Pre-K or Head Start slots.  Families should contact Polly Bolding at the ACS Preschool (polly.bolding@ashevillecityschools.net828-350-2926), to discuss enrollment options and be placed on our interest list prior to March 30.  If families qualify for income-based, no-cost options (NC Pre-K or Head Start), they will receive instructions for completing the relevant program application.  Income-based no-cost applications must be approved by our local NC Pre-K and Head Start program administrators in order to be considered.  Families will receive notification of acceptance if a space is available for their child beginning May 12.
