    Asheville Preschool @ Asheville Primary

The main Preschool Program campus is located at Asheville Primary School.  Located in West Asheville, our Primary campus includes 7 Preschool classrooms.  The Preschool @ Primary offers school–day (8:00-2:30) and full-day hours (normally 7:30-5:30; 2020-2021 reduced hours are 7:30-4:00pm), as well as a summer enrollment option.

Preschool classes at all locations blend 3- and 4-year olds and implement the Creative Curriculum to support hands-on learning and whole child development.

    Montessori Pre-K/K

Asheville Primary also offers Tuition and Scholarship Pre-K slots in Montessori Pre-K/K classrooms.  Montessori classrooms operate for the K-5 school day hours.

Montessori Pre-K is offered through a collaboration between the Asheville City Schools Preschool Program and Asheville Primary’s magnet school. Learn more about Montessori education.

    Our Campus History

Asheville City Schools Preschool opened in the early 1980s. In 1992, it moved to its current main location at 441 Haywood Road in Asheville (formerly Aycock Elementary). At that time, we primarily served children under the age of 5 whose parent(s) or guardian was working towards their GED. Since then, we have significantly expanded our programming, as well as the number of children that we serve.  In 1994, we were one of the first Early Head Start grantees in the nation. For 20 years we offered a high quality program serving pregnant women and children ages 0-3, while continuing to expand our services to children ages 3- to 5-years-old, including partnering with Head Start and providing NC Pre-K (formerly More at Four) services.

In 2015, the Preschool began expanding 3-5-year old classroom locations to other Asheville City elementary schools, while the Early Head Start program transitioned to the Verner Center for Early Learning in order to streamline infant and toddler services across Buncombe County. As preschool-age classrooms have been added across the district, we've greatly increased the tuition capacity for our Program while also increasing income-based slots.

In 2017 our Haywood Rd campus became Asheville Primary School (APS) and now houses both the Asheville City Schools Preschool Program main campus (Asheville Preschool) and a new Pre-K-3rd magnet school.  Asheville Primary’s magnet theme is Montessori education, and is proud to be the first public Montessori school in Asheville! In addition to our 5-star Preschool Program classrooms at Asheville Primary, the Preschool Program now offers Pre-K slots in the Asheville Primary Montessori Pre-K/K classrooms as well, as Montessori classrooms are typically grouped into 3-6-year-olds (Early Childhood) and 6-9-year-olds (Elementary I).
