Shannon Baggett, Principal
Shannon Baggett is a New Orleans native who moved to Asheville with her family in 2001. As an educator of 28 years, she began her career in New Orleans teaching high school Biology, Earth Science, and Anatomy and Physiology as well as coaching volleyball and softball. She designed and implemented a Medical Academy which included new curriculum and internships for students wishing to pursue a career in the medical field. After moving to Asheville, she taught high school science at Asheville High for 4 years and then became a part of a team of educators who designed and implemented the School of Inquiry & Life Sciences at Asheville (SILSA). Since the school’s inception in 2005-2015, Mrs. Baggett served as the Lead Teacher and Digital Lead Teacher. In August of 2015, she then joined the Vance Elementary team as the Assistant Principal. In January of 2017, she began leading the Montford North Star Academy team as the school Principal.
Mrs. Baggett earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts in Science Teaching degrees from the University of New Orleans. She attended Appalachian State University for her licensure in Instructional Technology/Media, and School Administration and Leadership. She earned National Board Certification in 2004.
Mrs. Baggett and her husband Jeff have a beautiful 12-year-old daughter. As a family, they enjoy traveling and exploring the outdoors.
Miranda Wheeler, Innovation Coordinator/Assistant Principal
Miranda Wheeler is a native of Western North Carolina. She has been an educator for 17 years. 11 years were spent teaching Middle School Math, and five have been as an Assistant Principal with Yancey County Schools. Mrs.Wheeler earned her Bachelor's degree from Mars Hill University, National Board Certification in 2010, and her Master's Degree from Gardner Webb University. She and her husband Scott have three wonderful girls: Skylar, Trinity, and Carter.
