SUBSTITUTE TEACHER HIRING PROCESS
Thank you for your interest in becoming a substitute teacher with Asheville City Schools.
School Board Policy 7430 requires that all substitute teachers have a 2 or 4 year college degree or High School Diploma and Effective Teacher Training for Substitutes. Copies of transcripts are required and must be included with your substitute application.
A copy of your teaching certificate or your Effective Teacher Training Certificate is also required. If you are a certified teacher or have a teaching certificate, you do not have to take the teacher training class. Please note that all substitutes are required to attend an orientation provided by the Asheville City Schools Human Resources Department.
If you do not have a teaching license, the applicant must complete a 30-hour Effective Substitute Teacher Training Course. Evidence of completion of this training must be provided prior to application. The Effective Teacher Training course is offered in three ways:
- AB Technical Community College: $130 + textbook cost
- Universtiy of North Carolina at Asheville (UNCA): $95 + textbook cost
- WRESA (online): $45

Complete the online application by clicking on the job listing and online application form link on the left navigation bar on the Career page to complete an EXTERNAL application, selecting substitute as your position.

- Driver's License
- Social Security Card
- Work authorization document (if applicable)
- Effective Teacher Training Certificate and/or Teaching Certificate
- Health Examination Certificate
- ACS Background Release Form
- W-4 Federal Tax Form
- NC-4 State Tax Form OR NC-4 EZ State Tax Form
- Authorization for Automatic Bank Deposit
- ESRR Retirement Form
- I-9 Employment Eligibilty Form
Your application and employment forms will then be reviewed, a complete background check will be completed, and your references will be verified.
Once all your forms have been submitted and reviewed, you will be invited to attend the three hour Asheville City Schools Substitute Orientation at 85 Mountain Street. Upon completion of the orientation, you will be given log-in credentials to Absence Management, our automated Substitute Management System.
Your name will be submitted to the ACS Board of Education for approval at the monthly board meeting (usually the first Monday of every month). You will then receive an email confirming your approval.
Substitute Teacher Pay for approved substitutes holding a teaching license is $125.00 per day. Approved substitutes not holding a teaching license are paid at a rate of $100.00 per day. Substitute pay for a regular classroom Teacher Assistant is $80.00 per day, regardless of certification. Substitute pay for an Exceptional Children’s Teacher Assistant is either $80.00 or $103.00 depending on your certification.
The first check is mailed on the last working day of the month. Each additional check is automatically direct deposited into your bank account at the end of the month.
