Meet our Vance Administration
Ruletta Hughes, Principal
I am Ruletta Hughes, the Principal of Vance Elementary School. I am happy to be a part of the Vance community. I am honored to have the opportunity to serve our students, staff, and families. My passion is to help people to grow. I believe that everyone in our school has the capacity for growth. I'm looking forward to being a part of that journey.
I am originally from Edenton, North Carolina. I did my undergraduate work at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After completing my undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I moved to Asheville in 1992. I completed my masters degree at East Tennessee State University. I taught music at Isaac Dickson for over fifteen years and served as an Assistant Principal there for three years. For the past two years I served as the testing coordinator and Assistant Principal at Asheville Middle School. I am married to Jerome Hughes and have two sons who work in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Carrie Buchanan, Assistant Principal
Mrs. Carrie Buchanan has been named the new Assistant Principal of Vance Elementary School.
With nearly 20 years in education, Buchanan most recently served as the 9th Grade Assistant Principal of Asheville High School. While at Asheville High School, she oversaw the 8th to 9th Grade transition process and was the lead administrator for MTSS, PBIS, AVID and the School Improvement Team. She too facilitated professional development sessions for Asheville High Professional Learning Communities and was an active collaborator in school-based Excellence with Equity decisions.
Buchanan began her teaching career in 1999 as a 4th Grade teacher in Shelby, NC before transitioning to Asheville City Schools in 2003. Her first position within Asheville City Schools was as a 2nd Grade teacher at Vance Elementary School. At Vance, she chaired the Summer Reading and Parent Involvement Committees as well as mentored both student and beginning teachers.
She too served as a 6th Grade English Language Arts teacher at Asheville Middle School for four years. While at Asheville Middle School, Mrs. Buchanan led Teachers’ College Professional Development workshops in Reading and Writing.
During her time at Asheville City Schools, Buchanan has also been part of the Elementary Reading Task Force Committee, the Committee for Spelling and Handwriting, the Developing Future Leaders Committee, the Teaching and Learning Teacher Team and was a member of the district’s Leadership Academy during the 2015-2016 school year.
Buchanan earned a bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from Greenville University as well as her master’s degree in Education with a focus on Reading and Literacy from Walden University. She received her Graduate Certificate in School Leadership from Appalachian State University in 2017. Additionally, Buchanan earned her National Board Certification in 2008.
