Wednesday, April 15:

Claxton Families:

With all that is going on, it is natural that some of our kids might struggle with their emotions. Mr. Ackerman also has a SeeSaw class that kids can join for very quick and meaningful lessons that are appropriate for all ages. I sent this to you “in the beginning” when we first started our at-home learning, but I wanted to remind you of this resource as we continue in this new way of doing things. Social and emotional learning has always been a priority at Claxton, and it’s an area that we can continue to support in a few different ways while students are at home.

Here’s Mr. Ackerman’s Letter with information about all of his resources he provides for our students.

I also wanted to paste in the SeeSaw directions, and as well as a video from Mr. Ackerman explaining how to log on!

Monday, April 13:

Dear Claxton Families:

Please see my letter with reminders and updates for this week.

We are missing you all so much! I hope you had a wonderful spring break and that you are ready to get back into the routines we were building right before the break.

Thank you for all you do,

Mary Nichols
Claxton Interim Principal

Wednesday, March 25:

Hi CLX Familes!

Please plan to come to Claxton today between 3pm and 5pm to pick up your NEW at-home learning packet as well as additional supplies (if needed!).

Here's how this will work! Please read carefully; we want to avoid human-to-human contact.

1. Pull your car through the drop-off/pick up lane as you would on a school day.

  • Enter line through Annandale St. North of Claxton.
  • Turn Right on Julia St.
  • Turn Right into Claxton parking lot.
  • PLEASE do not come down Hillside and turn left onto Julia. We will not be allowing cards to enter the parking lot this way

2. Someone will greet you from the street and ask you your child/ren's name, grade, and whether or not you need supplies. PLEASE do not take supplies if you don't need them. We made bags for families that do not have learning supplies at home (crayons, paper, pencils, etc.).

3. Wait in line, and when you get to the drop off circle at the FRONT of the school, put your car in PARK, exit the car and go to the table with your child's grade. Your child's packet and supplies will be waiting for you and labeled.

*****Please do not stall, stop and talk, or congregate outside of your car. We want this line to move as quickly as possible.

We will also be allowing families to pick their supplies up tomorrow (3/26) from 9am-11am.

Please do not come outside of these windows. Our building will not be open outside of these pick-up windows. We are trying to minimize staff in the building as well as human-to-human contact.

Thank you for everything you're doing to support your child during this time!

Claxton Interim Principal

Thanks, and you're doing a GREAT JOB!

PS - Here are morning announcements for 3-18-20

Tuesday, March 17:

Dear Claxton Parents:

My apologies! I gave you the wrong information about pick-up times.

If you'd like to pick up your child's device (grades 3-5 only), your medication, or any personal items, you can do that during the following times:

  • Tuesday - 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday - 12:30 - 5:30 p.m.

We will not be available for pick-up on Thursday and Friday like I originally said in Monday's email.

Thank you!

Monday, March 16:

Dear Claxton Parents:

I'll be emailing you daily, or as needed, when I have information or updates.

Today was definitely a weird experience for our staff. We saw many of you while you were picking up devices, personal items, and at-home learning packets. While we all seem in good spirits right now, I'm sure the next few weeks will be tough on us and our kids. We don't really know what the next two weeks will feel like or look like, but we are definitely working on it. We are also planning for a lot of the "what ifs" in terms of how long our school closure will last.

Thanks to those of you who came to pick up devices, medication, and at-home learning packets. Almost 150 devices were picked up today! We have decided to extend pick-up options for devices, and they can be picked up during the following times:

  • Tuesday - 9:30 - 2:30
  • Wednesday - 12:30 - 5:30
  • Thursday - 9:30 - 2:30
  • Friday - 9:30 - 2:30
*Please email your child's teacher if you do NOT wish to get a device.
*Please do not come if you are showing symptoms or feel sick! We'll find a way to get your belongings to you.

  • Some of you are letting me know that you're not getting my emails or Asheville City Schools emails. I am working on that, but for now please know that we will be posting all these emails on our website. I'm also asking teachers to forward all messages from me to their parent email lists. I apologize if you're getting them twice. We're just trying to make sure everyone has access to the information.
  • Our building will be open from 9:30-2:30 daily. Please do not plan to come in person to the building (except to pick up devices, medication, personal items this week).  We will happily take phone calls and answer emails during these times.

Digital Learning:

  • Our teachers are preparing for what digital learning will look like. Right now, to avoid overwhelming parents with information, we are going to take time to think about this and plan accordingly. I am asking teachers to hold off on sending additional work at this time. We care VERY much about making sure all of our students have access and can continue learning. The at-home learning packets were planned for the first 10 days out, and if there ends up being more weeks at home, we'll plan for that.
  • If you have questions about logging onto your child's device, please email your child's teacher.

Food Deliveries:

  • Food deliveries start tomorrow. The ACS website has all the information.
From ACS Website: Please know our School Nutrition, Transportation and Maintenance Departments have already developed a detailed plan about food distribution sites. The plan will allow us to continue to provide both breakfast and lunch for our students Monday - Friday. Should schools be closed, Asheville City Schools will deliver meals to Pisgah View Apartments, Hillcrest Apartments, Klondyke Apartments and Livingston Apartments. Additionally, Isaac Dickson Elementary School will have a drive-thru option should families prefer a grab and go meal. Our meal service will begin on Tuesday, March 17th.

IMPORTANT: Free Spectrum Internet for all NEW customers - call 1-844-488-8395. Installation fees will be waived for new student households.

Take care!
