2020-2021 Family Updates

Sunday, May 30

Dear Claxton Families,

We had a wonderful last week at Claxton, and we ended this year with smiles and celebrations that we waited a long time for. We sent our 5th graders off to middle school with a first-time red carpet walk with balloons, bubbles (yes, lots of bubbles!), and music, while Claxton Staff cheered them on from the sidelines. Thank you to the PTO and those that volunteered to set up for the event; it was a wonderful and fun way to close out the year. We know our 5th graders are going to do great things in middle school and beyond!  We will be posting some pictures and videos of the event on our Claxton Facebook Page later this week.

I also want to let you know about a fun summer camp option with Asheville Museum of Science:

AMOS’s Summer Science Camps

Scholarships are still available for STEM Camp

"Give your child an unforgettable summer science camp experience with the Asheville Museum of Science (AMOS). When school is out, STEAM adventure in! Sunday, April 18

Here's my weekly letter with information and reminders about the week ahead. Please take time to read my letter about important dates coming up.

Here are some additional reminders (added since my email last week about dro-off and pick-up) about carline drop-off in the morning:

  • Please do not drop your student off on Hillside. If you’re trying to avoid the long line, please park your car and walk your student to the building. We need an adult arriving with each student because we have to screen them with a temp check and questions; when they are alone and don’t pass the screening, we have to isolate them, and that’s pretty hard for the kids.
  • Please do not turn left from Hillside into the Claxton parking lot/carline during arrival and dismissal. Julia St. is a one-way-street during arrival and dismissal times.

Have a great week, Claxton Families!

Thursday, April 15

Dear Claxton Families:

With the start of Plan A, and 75% of students back in our building full-time, we are working through some dismissal and arrival procedures that have had to be altered due to COVID protocols.  Please take time to read the reminders.

  • When entering the carline (either for arrival or dismissal) please only enter the line using Merrimon to Annanadale. Some cars are driving west on Annandale, from Charlotte, and entering the carline on Julia. This prevents our buses from being able to access their route, and it disrupts our procedures for carline. Please plan to only use Merrimon to enter the carline during arrival and/or dismissal. (See pictures below)
  • Please use your yellow card every afternoon. This allows us to call your child really quickly, and keeps our line moving.
  • If you have someone picking up your child, they must be on our PowerSchool list of approved pick-ups. If you want to check or if you want to add someone, please email Ashley.griffin@acsgmail.net (our data manager) and she’ll help you out. All requests for pick-ups must be in writing (no phone calls please).
  • If you need to change how your child is getting home, please do so by 12:00. We have busy afternoons as we prepare for dismissal, and I am always worried we will miss a last minute change for a student’s dismissal. Also, all changes must be in writing - no phone calls please.
  • We have added four additional screeners to our carline this week. We are hoping with additional staff out there, we’ll get through things a bit quicker.
  • Please have everyone in your car wear a mask. Please don't exit your car.

Thank you SO MUCH for your patience as we work through this new world of arrival and dismissal with COVID protocols. We know the line is long, and we are working really hard to make it as quick and as efficient as possible. We adapt a little every day to make it better, but we also sometimes encounter new “obstacles” occasionally, and have to adjust. Because students can not gather in the gym for arrival or dismissal, we’ve had to create some new systems that have definitely been tested this week during the start of Plan A.

Again, thank you for all of your patience, support, AND ENCOURAGEMENT! We know we’re all working through this together; I am thankful we get to do so with our Claxton Families!

Wednesday, March 10

Claxton Families,

It's been quite an amazing few days. THANK YOU to our K-2 Blue Week Families for being so "ARTS-Y" (Attentive, Responsible, Thoughtful and Safe, Y'all!) with car-line drop-off and pick-up. We have a few reminders that we think will help our process go even more smoothly, so please take a moment to read...

  1. Please remain in your car. A staff member will either help open the door for your child at arrival or dismissal.
  2. Please wear a mask during drop-off and pick-up.
  3. During pick-up in the afternoons, please pull forward to our "holding area" at the front of the school if you need to adjust car seat straps and seat belts. You're welcome to get out of your car in this space to make those adjustments.

Thank you for YOUR part in making the start of this special week so successful. We are seeing a lot of joy in our classrooms, and we are looking forward to the next three weeks of welcoming students back into the building!

Thursday, March 4:

Claxton Families:

There's a lot to know about the upcoming transition, and we're here to help!

Please read my letter below AND take time to read through our Frequently Asked Questions. (updated with new info at the top).

As we move through our very busy week, I am hearing a few questions here and there, and I figured it would be a good idea to send an update with more information and/or clarify some things that might be confusing. THANK YOU for asking great questions! I have updated our Frequently Asked Questions for Virtual/Hybrid Learning  with the most recent additions at the top. There is a lot of useful/important information, so please do take time to read through this document for updates.

Some important IMMEDIATE reminders:

  • Please be sure to complete a transportation request form if you plan to have your student ride the bus to and/or from school. We have most of these submitted, so this is a final reminder. Bus routes are being created/have been created.
  • All families should complete an attestation form before their child returns to in-person learning.
  • If you have supplies you want to donate that are for general classroom use, please drop any day (including next week!) at the front of our school between 9-12. We’ll have some bins labeled outside.
  • We have decided to not host our Q and A with Nurse Alday that we originally scheduled for this evening due to some scheduling conflicts. Instead, Nurse Alday will be creating an easy-to-understand resource that addresses the following four things:
    • How do we screen students for COVID daily?
    • What does it mean to be “excluded” from school? (Exclusion means that a student or staff member can not attend in-person).
    • What has to happen in order for a student to return to in-person learning after being “excluded?”

I will be sending this resource out this weekend.

Additionally:

We have created a place on our Claxton Website with videos and helpful information for parents to know.

Here are some videos for you to watch about masks, arrival/dismissal, bus procedures, and other procedures at Claxton. We will be showing these to students on our K-2 transition day (Friday, March 5th), as well as on the Honeycomb News. 3rd-5th teachers will show on their transition day on March 18th.

This page on our website has videos as well as MAPS to help with arrival and dismissal/car line, supply lists, and other important Return-to-Learn information specific to Claxton.

Thank you for taking the time to read through all of this information. We know it’s a lot, but we’re here to help if you’re feeling overwhelmed! We are looking forward to this next phase of the school year.

Friday, Febrary 26:

Claxton Families:

I am reaching out to let you know that you'll be receiving a letter from your child's teacher about the transition to Plan B.

Our teachers and staff have been working really hard to prepare an organized an smooth transition from Plan C (100% virtual for all students) to Plan B (Hybrid with a choice of 100% virtual). The first step was to look at our parent preference results that were due February 12th (Virtual or Hybrid), and then to use those numbers to determine an instructional model that was safe for both staff and students.

Each grade level used their numbers to determine how to best structure hybrid and virtual learning, and they are all a bit different. We are tasked with fulfilling three roles: 100% virtual, hybrid-remote learning (which is online), and hybrid in-person. Additionally, our youngest learners in Kindergarten have much different needs than our oldest learners in 5th grade.

After we determined the instructional model, we looked at the parent preference information and selected teacher assignments for each student, and then we determined blue/green week assignment, simultaneously matching siblings and same-household students. We considered each student as an individual, and we sometimes prioritized classmates or peers rather than keeping the same teacher, or vice versa, depending on the child.

The email you will get today will communicate your child's virtual teacher and/or their hybrid-remote and hybrid-in-person teachers.  While it might seem like an overload of change right now (and we totally understand!), I want to encourage you to keep moving forward with us as we steadily inch towards the closure of a very unique school year.  Please support your child as they work through this change with us.  Either for those returning in person or for those transitioning to a new virtual teacher, our main goal is that students continue learning their grade level content AND that they feel connected to and supported by their Claxton Family. For my own children, I am encouraging them to look at this as an opportunity to grow even more peer and teacher connections at a school we already love.

We are almost to the final nine weeks of a year like no other, and we are going to make it through this together, supporting one another, and hopefully giving a lot of grace and understanding as we transition into Plan B. Please look for the email later this afternoon from your child's teacher.

Have a great weekend,

Happy Friday, Claxton Families!

Thanks for some amazing participation with our DanceFit fundraiser! This is a quick reminder that the classes in each grade level who get the most donations over the weekend will get a Fun Friday and Coffee for the Teacher!  Each student will also get a bonus prize in the mail.

Here are some stats heading into the weekend:

  • So far we have had raised $4,775.
  • So far 158 out of 407 students have registered at FunRun.com.

Our fundraising goal for the school is $16,000, and we are hoping we can reach this goal by Friday, October 9th (the day of the Dance Fit).  To get started, Go to FunRun.com and register your students (it's so easy!). There are directions, scripted emails, and idea about how to get pledging started.

Every day we update students on the Honeycomb News (Claxton Morning Announcements).  You can watch Friday's Honeycomb News Here!

Wednesday, September 2

Dear Claxton Families:

I am emailing with some information about the upcoming STAR assessment that all Claxton students will take during the month of September.

Please take a moment to read by letter here. In the letter is a very informative video from Mrs. Peeples, our Instructional Facilitator. She will walk you through what you, as parents, need to know about the assessment and what you can expect on your end as you help your child get set up remotely.

You can also share the video with caregivers who might be helping your child/ren during the day.

Thank you for taking the time to read the information. If you have questions about the assessment, please reach out to your child's teacher. They will be contacting you with more information in the coming weeks.

Sincerely,

Mary Nichols

Happy Friday!

I am so proud of our Claxton Community! We made it through our first week!  I know we still have a lot to learn and do, but I have a lot of hope after seeing our teachers and students back together again.

I wanted to send you this letter from our Claxton PTO.  We are so grateful for the work our PTO does to support our school community. From community engagement, field trips, and scholarships to teacher grants and supply money, our PTO volunteers ensure our students and teachers have what they need.

Thanks for taking the time to read what PTO will look like for the coming year. We would love to see new families get involved as well!

Dear Claxton Families,

Please take a moment to read my letter about the schedule for remote learning. Within the letter is a video where I present the schedule and explain the reasoning behind our decisions.  Thought it is a lengthy video, I hope it will help you prepare for remote learning for the first nine weeks of school.  Additionally, there is a google form where you can comment or ask questions.
