New staff at CLX!
We want to give a warm Claxton Hive welcome to some new staff members!
Brittany Koukol, Guidance Counselor
I was born and raised in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, in Tacoma, Washington. I moved to Colorado for college and completed my bachelor's degree in psychology from the University of Colorado. After living in Vail, CO, I moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico for an artist apprenticeship. There I found my passion not only for art, but also for working with children and families in community mental health. I completed my master’s degree in Art Therapy and Counseling at Southwestern College in Santa Fe and
became a licensed therapist in 2016. For 2 years, I designed and facilitated the Art Therapy program with the Santa Fe Public Schools’ School Readiness Program. I was also involved in a grant program to integrate mental health and substance use treatment into medical clinics. My husband and I moved to Asheville in 2017 and I have spent the last 3 years as a school-based therapist at Claxton. I am so excited to bring my love for art and creative expression, mental health, and community to my role as Claxton’s
School Counselor. I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor (LCMHC) by the State of North Carolina and a Registered Art Therapist (ATR) by the Art Therapy Credentials Board.
Monica Kohler, Kindergarten
I am excited to be living and working in Asheville, North Carolina. I grew up in Long Island, NY and received my B.A. from Clark University in Massachusetts. After working in non profit organizations for 7 years I received my Masters in Early Childhood Education from Hunter College in NYC. I worked as a Pre-K Teacher for Bushwick United Head Start for 2 years and I have taught Kindergarten and 1st grade for the last 6 years at P.S. 503 in Brooklyn. I am thrilled to be in Asheville with my husband, Rob, where we enjoy being close to the mountains so we can be out in the gorgeous nature that surrounds us.
I am looking forward to participating in the creative and artistic focus that Claxton Elementary has and working with the chickens and in the veggie patch with the kids.
Kayla Sapata, Second Grade
Hi Claxton Families! I'm Miss Sapata and I am new to Claxton this year. I just moved from southwest Florida where I was born and raised. I graduated from Florida Gulf Coast University with a degree in Early Childhood Education. I taught for 4 years in Florida before deciding that Asheville, NC was where I wanted to be. I am so excited to join you here!
