Do the Write Thing
Asheville City middle schoolers have powerful voices that deserve to be heard. And, on Wednesday, April 10th, students, teachers, parents and community leaders gathered at the Venue to celebrate 7th and 8th Graders who used their words to make a difference.
More than 1,350 essays were submitted by both ACS and Buncombe County middle schoolers as part of the fourth annual Do the Write Thing Essay Contest. Our future changemakers wrote about real issues they face, like community violence, depression, substance abuse and racial issues.
Six finalists from Asheville Middle School and Montford North Star Academy were honored at the awards ceremony, with AMS 8th Grader Reginald Redfern being selected as the district’s ultimate winner.
Along with both his teacher and a parent, Reginald will be traveling to Washington, D.C. on an all-expenses-paid trip this July for the Do the Write Thing National Recognition Week.
During past National Recognition Weeks, middle schoolers have met with the Attorney General of the United States and Members of Congress to discuss the problem of youth violence. In addition to interacting with dignitaries, Reginald will have his writing published in the Library of Congress.
