Asheville High/SILSA Speech and Debate Team Win Big at Nationals

The Asheville High SchoolSchool of Inquiry and Life Sciences at Asheville (SILSA) Speech and Debate Team had a successful week competing in the National Speech and Debate Association National Championship!

Made up of Ella Carlinnia, Katie Fiore, Nora Flynn-McIver, Kai Herndon, Isabelle Freireich and Adina Weizman, the team finished second overall in the Karl Mundt Cumulative Congress Sweepstakes, losing to Riverside High School in South Carolina by only four points. This is the highest placement ever at the NSDA National Championship by the Asheville High/SILSA team!

Additionally, a special congratulations go to the following students on their individual awards:

  • Nora Flynn-McIver: Semifinalist in Senate and Triple Tctafinalist in Extemporaneous Debate
  • Isabelle Freireich: Quarterfinalist in House
  • Adina Weizman - Octafinalist in Prepared Prompt Speaking

The competition, which was previously scheduled to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico, was held completely virtually. Over 5,300 students from across the country participated in this year's national championship tournament, which was the largest one ever.
