Robin Mehler Announced as District Beginning Teacher of the Year

As Principal Hughes said her morning greetings over the intercom, Mrs. Robin Mehler was finishing up a few last-minute tasks before her 8:30 AM synchronous lesson. But, the 4th Grade educator was in for quite a surprise when Mrs. Hughes made her final announcement — Mrs. Mehler, who is currently in her second year of teaching at Vance Elementary School, had been chosen as Asheville City Schools’ Beginning Teacher of the Year!

“It’s such an honor and a huge surprise,” said Mehler. “I put so much into my job, and I do it because I have my own kids and want to make sure I’m giving my best to other people’s children because they’re our most valuable thing in the whole world. This is so unexpected and a really nice pat of the back.”

Along with her school principal, both Dr. Dickerson, our Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources, and Kim Dechant, ACS’s Director of Recruitment and Induction, were there to celebrate Mehler's exciting accomplishment.

The NCCAT Beginning Teacher of the Year process was developed to honor and retain new teaching professionals who show promise as an excellent educational leader.

As Asheville City Schools’ finalist, Mehler will now go on to represent our district in the state competition. The winner will be announced in February 2021.
