Winter Weather Options for 2020-2021 School Year
Good Afternoon Students, Staff and Families. This is Ashley-Michelle Thublin, Executive Director of Communications.
With this week’s temperature highs in the 50s and 60s, I’m sure snow is the farthest thing from your mind. However, in an effort to keep you informed, I wanted to let you know about the inclement weather options the district may call this school year.
In addition to our traditional two-hour delays and closed for students/optional teacher workdays (which is the “normal snow day call”), one call the district may make is a “Virtual Day.” During a “Virtual Day” neither students nor staff will report to campus; however, we will carry out remote instruction — it will just be from the safety of our homes.
Because all students have been issued a device, many teachers will deliver their “Virtual Day” plans digitally. But, knowing western North Carolina winter weather can cause quite a few trees to fall, please understand that should your home lose power, students will be able to complete their asynchronous lessons the week following our “Virtual Day” call.
Essentially, we will use “Virtual Days” to keep students and the calendar from going off target when bad weather closes schools. Plus, an added benefit of this alternative is that we won’t have to make up the missed day, take away a Staff Work Day, decrease the number of days we have off for Spring Break or extend the school year.
More information about the district’s Inclement Weather procedures can be found here. Additionally, click here to see whether your neighborhood falls on our current list of “No Buses on Icy Roads,” which means it wouldn’t be traveled on should that call be made by our superintendent.
Thank you for your continued support of Asheville City Schools, and hopefully, it will be quite a while before you have to hear my voice early in the morning.
