Abby Mulchay Named ACS's Educator of Excellence Award Recipient
It is with great excitement that Asheville City Schools announces Mrs. Abby Mulchay as our 2021-2022 Teacher of Excellence. The Asheville Middle School educator was supporting an AVID Class when school and district leaders surprised her during last week’s announcement.
Mulchay has been teaching for 17 years and is in her ninth as a member of the Cougar Family. She believes the key to supporting her students' progress is emulating “lessons or strategies that are already working well” in other classes, then building upon them.
“It takes a community to support our students, especially those with unique needs,” said Mulchay. “I would be remiss if I did not pay my respects to my general education co-teachers, EC instructional aides, and support staff who are student-centered, consider the 'whole child,' and frequently reflect on ways to enhance their teaching to support all learners more universally. Parents, families, guardians, and the students themselves (most importantly) all play an important role in communicating with me and other staff members about what’s working, what’s not, and next steps for success. Our counselors and social workers are often working tirelessly behind the scenes. I am so grateful for this hardworking team.”
In addition to her time in the classroom, she serves on Asheville Middle School’s Student Improvement Team and the Restorative Practices Committee.
Mrs. Mulchay will too be recognized at the state level during this November’s Exceptional Children Division’s 70th Conference in Greensboro.
