Asheville Primary Reassignment Updates

January 7, 2022

Good Afternoon Students, Staff and Families.  This is Tanya Presha, Academic and Program Support Coordinator.

First, I want to thank the families who were able to join us for Wednesday’s Enrollment Information Session.  You asked thoughtful questions and gave us some additional items to consider as we look to support you and your family’s decision on school placement.

If you were unable to attend the meeting, a recording can be found here as well as a copy of the presentation I shared.

Current Kindergarten - 4th Grade School Selection Form

If your child is a current Asheville Primary Kindergarten - 4th Grader, please know that your family has the opportunity to complete your child’s School Selection Form now - Friday, February 25th.  This form is how we will learn more about your school preference, as families will rank their school choices 1st through 5th for 2022-2023.

Additionally, please know the February 25th deadline will allow the enrollment team to assess the numbers and go before the Board of Education.  At this time, our recommendation will be to give priority placement to APS students at the school of their choice before placing other students.

Current Pre-K School Selection

Current Asheville Primary Pre-K students will complete their applications for the 2022 - 2023 school year during the district’s regular open enrollment window.  This year, open enrollment begins on February 7th  and ends on March 14th.  Additional information can be found here

School Videos

To support your family’s selection process, videos that showcase each of our 2022 - 2023 elementary schools and highlight their unique magnet themes can be found here.

Family School Tours

Families are also invited to visit each of our five elementary schools during one of our Thursday Open Houses.  They will occur from 3:30 - 6:30 PM on January 13th, 20th and 27th.  At this time, they are scheduled to occur in person.  If there are any updates, they will be promptly communicated.

Optional School Tours for Students

And, current Asheville Primary Kindergarten - 4th Graders will have the option to tour all five of our other elementary schools in person.  Because of the rise in community spread, optional student tours have been postponed until Tuesday, February 1st.  Your child’s teacher will be sending home a field trip permission form.  Staff will accompany students on these tours.

Thank you for your support, and if you have any enrollment questions, please reach out to me by email at tanya.presha@acsgmail.net

January 4, 2022

Good Evening Asheville Primary Students, Staff and Families.  This is Tanya Presha, Academic and Program Support Coordinator, with an update about tomorrow’s Enrollment Information Session.

As shared in yesterday’s COVID update, we are limiting the number of visitors to our campus because of the rise of Omicron.

Therefore, we are inviting families to join us virtually tomorrow, Wednesday, January 5th at 5:15 PM.  We will be canceling our morning session due to staffing shortages; Central Office is pushing into other campuses to cover staff absences.  But, we hope that more families will be able to join us now that we’re meeting on Zoom.   Additionally, please know that the meeting will be recorded if you are unable to attend.

December 13, 2021

Good Evening Asheville City Schools Students, Staff and Families.  This is Dr. Gene Freeman, Superintendent of Asheville City Schools, and James Carter, Chairman of the Asheville City Board of Education.

During tonight’s Regular Meeting, important updates were made concerning our school community.

In a 4 -1 vote, the Asheville City Board of Education accepted the Asheville Primary School Study.  And, in a 3-2 vote, the Board voted to close the school beginning in the 2022-2023 school year.

This means that all students that currently attend Asheville Primary School will have the opportunity to attend another ACS elementary school starting next school year.  The four Preschool classrooms currently housed on the Asheville Primary School campus will also be relocated.

Asheville Primary School families will have the chance to select another ACS elementary school before open enrollment begins for the district in February.  As much as possible, current Asheville Primary School students will receive their first choice school selection.  Additional information about this process will come from Tanya Presha, Academic and Program Support Coordinator, who is over enrollment.

What makes Asheville City Schools great, isn’t a building.  It’s the staff, teachers and what we’re able to offer our students.  Regardless of which elementary school your family selects, I’m confident your child will receive a warm welcome in a loving, supportive, academically-rich environment.  We’re fortunate that all our elementary schools offer art, music, physical education, enrichment opportunities and outstanding student support staff.

The Board also announced that all staff members of Asheville Primary are maintaining their employment within Asheville City Schools.

Please know that extra staff will be on the Asheville Primary School campus tomorrow, Tuesday, December 14th to support our students and staff as they are processing tonight’s decision.

Anticipating this news will spark many questions, we will be meeting and plan to send out follow-up communications.
